When you are running a business, either as the owner or the CEO of a large organization, you quickly learn that it is impossible to be an expert in everything. All you know is that you have a problem that needs to be solved. I know that it can be very uncomfortable signing a check for a project or a service when you aren’t exactly clear on what is going to happen. What if you have a written plan that would clearly define what will be accomplished this year and exactly what you are paying for?
A copy can load a lot of time and financial resources into a website. I could write pages of stories describing business owners that have come to us after spending thousands of dollars on their website and come out of it feeling like they are getting no where. As I mentioned in my previous blog posts, if this is where you are at, take the lead on your website project. A good start would be to draft a Website Strategic Plan.
Why create a Website Strategic Plan?
During 2011, we sat down with most of our maintenance clients and created a Website Plan for the entire year. First, we wanted to learn more from our clients about their business plans for the new year and get them thinking about the impact on the website. Second, we wanted to help our clients budget their resources. This included things like additional money for bigger development projects, when to budget for online advertising and when to take on extra help to execute social media campaigns.
We scheduled out all of the website projects and routine maintenance for the entire year. This was helpful for everyone. We knew what needed to be done each month and the client knew when they needed to send things like content, photos or keyword information.
I will admit that by the end of the year, the plans did change and priorities were shifted. But it was clear to everyone what had been accomplished and our clients on Maintenance Plans utilized this available resource to the fullest. No one complained they were not getting their money’s worth.
I believe this process would benefit any business. That is why we created our Free Website Strategic Plan e-book. This document will give you a great head start to creating your own Strategic Plan. The process with be worth it if the business decision makers can get together with the team working on the website and get everyone working towards the same goal.
