“Can’t I just use the software I already own?” –
- Is working on your website the best use of your time?
- Although your software can generate the website for you,
software can’t help you decide what content to put in the website or
help create a strategy for your web business.
- Code generated by your software is not “search engine
optimized,” so it does not help your business performance in search
rankings.
“Won’t My web hosting vendor will take care of my website for me?” –
- Personnel at IT firms come from a computer science/engineering
background. They may not have expertise in marketing and search
engine optimization. This will still be up to you to figure out.
- Although IT firms may offer website
management, it is not
the focus of their business. Your service requests may be given low
priority against other network issues.
“What if I am working with a graphic design or marketing firm
already?” –
- Many design firms only update web sites they’ve designed, and
they make website updates based on their own work schedule. If your
information is timely, you can’t wait a couple of weeks for updates
to be performed.
- A design firm’s core business is design projects. When you need
a website update, your design firm may turn your request into an
opportunity to sell a re-design.
- Traditional marketing firms have been slow to adopt
search
engine optimization practices. The sites they design are still
graphic-rich with flash animations and animated gifs, even though
none of these will help the visibility of your website on search
engines.
“Could I just purchase a Content Management System instead?” –
- Since a CMS package may cost more than your website itself, its
price tag eliminates CMS as a possibility for many small businesses.
- Remember that when you buy a CMS package, you still have to do
all the work yourself.
- CMS cannot give you advice on when to make
website changes, what
to change and how to change so that your website grows your
business.
